Nothing seems quite as “Colorado” as a backpack trip to a high-alpine lake in one of our congressionally-protected wilderness areas: clear water, pristine meadows, wildlife descending at dusk to drink and only birdsong to break the silence. But today, alpine lakes in our local Eagles Nest and Holy Cross Wilderness Areas can attract 40-50 campers nightly, often with dogs. To preserve these special places, we need to adopt and follow wilderness camping ethics and practices designed to leave no trace of our visit.
